In many Indigenous stories, Coyote is presented as the creator of the world — fashioning the universe and making people out of mud. Yet his most celebrated role is that of a culture hero: he steals fire and bestows it upon human beings, granting them warmth, light, and civilization.
This act of courageous theft mirrors the most famous deed of the Greek mythological figure Prometheus, who was severely punished by the gods for stealing fire from the heavens and delivering it to humanity.
